Faith Deconstruction, Christianity & Friendship | Still Room at the Table with Sean McCoy
What happens when a longtime friend begins deconstructing his Christian faith? Can friendship survive different beliefs about Christianity and Jesus?
In this Other People's Shoes bonus episode, Neil Matthews and Sean McCoy meet face to face for the FIRST TIME in San Antonio, Texas. Sean drove roughly three hours to join Neil for a conversation about faith deconstruction, friendship, listening, and belonging.
🎙️ STILL ROOM AT THE TABLE
CAPTAIN'S LOG | SPECIAL BONUS EPISODE
Guest: Sean McCoy
Captain's Log:
Some friendships begin with a handshake. Ours began with a connection.
Years ago, Sean and I connected through a podcasting community called Rocket. A show swap brought him to Other People's Shoes to talk about his podcast, Come to the Table. What started as two podcast hosts meeting online became a friendship built through calls, texts, FaceTime, Marco Polo, and countless conversations across the miles.
Yet through all those years, we'd never met in person. Not once.
Until San Antonio.
Sean drove roughly three hours so we could finally sit across from each other without a screen between us. The timing mattered, too. Sean had shared a Facebook post about deconstructing his Christian faith. As his friend, and someone whose faith remains important to me, I wanted to understand his experience.
Not to win an argument. Not to change his mind. But to listen.
James 1:19 reminds us: "Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger."
Sean also holds a unique distinction: he's appeared on Other People's Shoes more times than any other guest. Yet this was our first conversation recorded in the same room—and our first one captured together on video.
Two friends. Different journeys. One table.
When someone we love begins questioning what we believe, is there still room for them at the table?
🧭 Guest Encounter
Sean McCoy is OPS's most frequent returning guest and, more importantly, my friend. We met through Rocket and a show swap featuring his podcast, Come to the Table. What might have been a single professional exchange grew into years of genuine connection.
When Sean publicly shared that he was deconstructing his Christian faith, I wanted to hear his story, not prescribe what his next chapter should look like. This first in-person meeting gave us the chance to ask difficult questions with care.

🧭 Footprint Moment
Some friendships are measured in years. Others are measured in the willingness to show up.
Sean drove three hours to sit across from me, but the more meaningful journey may be the one we continue making as friends, even when our perspectives differ.
Listening doesn't require us to abandon our convictions. And friendship shouldn't require someone to have every answer.
Perhaps the deepest footprint we can leave is making sure someone knows there's still room for them at the table.
